I don't understand how people run 1080p cameras - you can't see the person's face clear enough if there's a crime, what are you going to show the police? Footage of a person that only shows relative, height, weight, gender and skin color? Too many people fit the same description!) I like that I don't need to run the viewer through a PC either, though I can, which is nice. They're also higher quality and the H.265+ gives me a ton of storage time too (meaning I don't need to buy a second WD Gold/HGST data center HDD since I am writing more than 170tb per year with 6 x 8mp cameras and 4 x 6mp cameras). They're more expensive than other cameras (Reolink, Amcrest, etc.) but not when I consider that I don't have to pay the ridiculous license fee for each one. I bought a dedicated 4k 16 channel Hikvision for 1/2 the cost of the Synology and plug and play with the Hikvision cameras just works. I can't justify the cost of the Synology based on the experience I've had. I appreciate you taking the time to share this but last week I decided to go with a dedicated NVR. My biggest missed feature would be that Blue Iris had an endpoint that would serve video, just like a camera, and I had written a custom desktop application to display it. I think it does have a discovery mechanism, though I knew my camera details already.

Setup of my four Hikvision cameras was easy - input the IP, username, and password was all it took. The viewer has all the expected features - live view, timeline, recording manager, etc. I typically have the viewer open on my Windows Desktop and I have it installed on my iPhone. I'd describe my installation is reliable. I've had no camera dropouts of the type the OP describes. I'm currently doing motion detection on the NAS.

This is four cameras recording full time at 10fps, two at 1920x1080 and two at 1280x720. I just checked, and NAS CPU is in the 10-12% range. CPU usage is low for my four cameras, which is something I appreciate.

The licenses are transferable from one NAS to another, in case you upgrade (I upgraded from a DS1019+ to a DS1819+ already). I did have to spend some $$ to get additional licenses as I have four cameras and the NAS only has licenses for two out of the box, so I bought a 4-camera license and now I have some room to grow. I find Surveillance Station pretty easy to use. Surveillance Station lacks some of the functionality that Blue Iris had, so there has come up a thing or two that I've been missing. I used to be a Blue Iris user, then I bought a NAS and consolidated functionality to it.

Unreal.ДЄre my expectations too high for this as an NVR? Should I be using something else? Oh, so it's a $50-$100 PER camera program. Now if I want to USE it on a camera its free too, right? No, that would require another license to record and then ANOTHER to VIEW it on the camera live. Last thing that annoyed me was how slimy Synology is about their 'Transactions' Surveillance app. What is the $56 per camera license really getting me?

This seems like a very basic feature to not have. I can't have audio record and not record based on a schedule. Then I'm looking at some H.265 cameras and I see SS doesn't support live viewing H.265?! Not in a browser of course but not in their dedicated client!? This camera needs to be viewed from 9-5 6 days a week. This morning, after changing nothing, the camera is visible again. I tell support about the change and they say to just wait for the ticket. Then after support says I need to submit a ticket I get a 'can't live view with these settings' message. But it was already working the day before. instructions for settings to change, and then the next day it's stuck 'Initializing' for 30-60 minutes until I try changing settings and then it's just a blank screen. Issues I'm having: added a camera (from their supported list), followed all manuf. I also thought it would be feature packed but I'm having doubts now. Instead of trying every random company out there I thought Surveillance Station from a brand like Synology would be as close to rock solid as I could reasonably expect and be the frustration free way to go. I bought 2 Reolink NVRs, both started rebooting on their own within a day to a week and then so did their replacements.
